Coach: Dave Wannstedt (1st year at Pittsburgh)
Team Name: Panthers
2004 Record: 8-4
2004 Big East Conference Record 4-2
2004 ATS Record: 6-5
Returning Starters: 16
Dave Wannstedt takes over for Walt Harris who departed for Stanford. Wannstedt will look to move the team to a more run orientated smash mouth team that was the mold of Pittsburgh in seasons past.
The offense returns 9 starters and is lead by standout QB Tyler Palko. Palko figures to get Heisman attention after his 17-2 TD-INT ratio over the last 6 games of the 2004 campaign. Palko will have an outstanding target to throw to in Greg Lee. Lee racked up almost 1300 yards and 10 TDs in 20004. The Panthers will use a trio of running backs which could include freshman Conredge Collins.
On defense the back 7 is very deep and very talented but there are concerns on the line which lost 3 starters. If the understudies can fall into place, and with Wannstedts defensive philosophy, the Panther defense could be nasty.
If not for Louisville, Pittsburgh would be the team to beat in the Big East this season. All in all the Panthers should start the season out 8-0 and than play the Cardinals in early November with the Big East title on the line. We are predicting Pitt will lose here but 9-10 wins and a bowl game is probable.
