Coach: Bobby Petrino (3rd year at Louisville)
Team Name: Cardinals
2004 Record: 11-1
2004 Conference USA Record 8-0
2004 ATS Record: 10-2
Returning Starters: 11
The Cardinals finished #6 & #7 in the polls respectably last year which was their highest finish ever. Louisville had the top scoring offense in the nation last season which put up over 49 ppg as well as posted an incredible 7.2 yards per play! If Louisville hopes to have the same success as last years squad they will need to do so with only 11 returning starters. This year the Cardinals lose their starting quarter back, tailback, leading tackler, and best wide out. The astonishing thing is even after losing all that talent the team could be even better than last years squad.
Last years rookie of the year, and this years starting QB Brian Brohm, had plenty of game time experience last season. Brohm is a more dangerous runner and encompasses a stronger arm than Conference USA player of the year Stefan Lefors. He will have plenty of help from an offensive line that returns four starters. The Cardinals also return 3 blue chip wide outs and a stud RB in Kolby Smith who averaged over 9 yards per carry last year.
The Cardinal defense has questions, but will only have to be adequate for Louisville to win most games. We don’t know if the Cardinals will be as dominating as last year when they outscored opponents by 37.2 ppg, but an undefeated season is in reach.
