2008 NFC North Division Preview
By Adam Barone
1. Minnesota Vikings (9-7): Adrian Peterson’s phenomenal abilities are obvious, but his ability to stay healthy is not. If he stays on the field the Vikes’ defense is good enough that they could have a shot at the playoffs, having forced 21 fumbles last season—second best in the league. Tarvaris Jackson will need to learn to manage the offense better, and improve on his touchdown-interception ratio of 9:12.
2. Green Bay Packers (8-8): Aaron Rodgers is not Brett Favre, so this will not be the same 13-3 Packers from last season. Six of the last seven teams the Packers played last season had almost nothing to play for. Their schedule will be more difficult, and Ryan Grant will need to prove that he’s for real with defenses less respectful of the passing game.
3. Chicago Bears (6-10): Not selecting a quarterback at all in
the draft seems like an obvious mistake for the Bears. But if Matt
Forte can find some running room and the defense can return to its
old form, then the quarterback situation won’t be too important.
The strength of the passing game will be the tight ends, but there’s
some untapped talent in the receiving corps. Rex Grossman’s
hands are the same size they were when he was 10 years old, so there
will be more fumbled snaps.
4. Detroit Lions (5-11): Last season started off well in Detroit,
but they were eventually back to the same old Lions. Running back
Kevin Jones is out, rookie Kevin Smith is in, and will compete with
Tatum Bell for the starting job. Smith’s numbers at Central
Florida were some of the best in the country, but against inferior
competition. Detroit will also have to replace defensive tackle
Shaun Rogers, which will be tough.
