2008 NFC East Division Preview
By Adam Barone
1. Dallas Cowboys (12-4): Probably the best offense in the NFC, the Cowboys shouldn’t have trouble winning the division. Marion Barber will “start” over rookie Felix Jones, but as we saw with Julius Jones and Barber, that role is meaningless. There’s a good chance that Felix is better than Julius, so the Cowboys could be improved. Oh, by the way, Adam “don’t call me Pacman” Jones now wears a star on his helmet. The Cowboys collect Joneses.
2. New York Giants (8-8): Yes, they won the Super Bowl. No, they’re not really that good. Don’t be fooled. The Giants were 14th in total offense, 21st in pass yards per game, 17th in points allowed per game, and Eli Manning threw 20 interceptions with a 73.9 quarterback rating. The retirement of Michael Strahan shouldn’t mean much, as Justin Tuck has the potential to be an all-pro, but they won’t be repeating.
3. Washington Redskins (8-8): The Redskins have been obsessed with upgrading Jason Campbell’s receiving arsenal for a while now. They weren’t able to trade for Chad Johnson, but they upgraded the receiving corps in the draft. Campbell is still struggling, but should have plenty of places to throw the ball now, as Washington still has Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El. The trade for Jason Taylor will greatly improve the Skins’ defense, and add significantly to their 33 sacks while taking pressure off the secondary.
4. Philadelphia Eagles (7-9): The Eagles’ window is closing fast, just as Donavan McNabb’s career seems to be winding down. If the record above is anywhere close to correct, then this could be the last go around for the Eagles as we’ve known them. The signing of Asante Samuel should help, but it will be an uphill climb, especially considering their division.
