2008 Houston Texans Predictions
By Adam Barone
Rundown
Don’t sleep on those pesky Houstonians. Mario Williams has
turned out to not be such a terrible pick after all, and they’ve
developed one of the league’s best passing games. They were
11th in the league in passing yards per game, while Andre Johnson,
one of the game’s best receivers, played in only nine games,
catching just 60 balls after topping 100 in 2006.
The Texans traded for quarterback Matt Schaub before last season and weren’t disappointed, though Schaub did miss five games due to injury. He completed a fantastic 66.4 percent of his passes and had an 87.2 rating on the season. Houston could have a top ten passing game if both Johnson and Schaub can stay healthy. They’ll need to improve on their 22nd ranked rushing attack.
The future is bright for the defense as well, led by Williams, tackle Amobi Okoye, and linebacker DeMeco Ryans.
A few players were lost in the off season, but with tight end Jeb Putzier and linebacker Shawn Barber heading the list there’s little cause for concern.
Acquisitions include running back Chris Brown, safety Nick Ferguson, quarterback Quinn Gray, center Chris Myers, and cornerback Jacques Reeves.
The Texans will need to improve on their 24.0 points per game against, but are a sleeper to make the playoffs in the AFC.
Draft Analysis
Following a promising 2007 season the Texans seem to have killed
some of their momentum with a rather ho-hum draft.
Their first round pick, offensive lineman Duane Brown out of Virginia Tech, will be a welcome addition, but he doesn’t create the buzz that Texans fans may have been hoping for.
Third round pick Steve Slaton out of West Virginia was their one exciting pick. Slaton is similar to Reggie Bush with his big play ability and lack of prototypical size for an NFL back.
