2008 Denver Broncos Predictions
By Adam Barone
Rundown
Most of the noise the Broncos made this off season was in their
front office. They now have a new G.M., a new offensive coordinator,
and a new defensive coordinator.
For some reason the team didn’t see running back Travis Henry as devoted enough to the success of the team and let him go following a 12 game, 691 yard season.
It’s strange how they could think such a thing of a guy who has nine children by nine different women in at least four states. He’s the personification of devotion and responsibility.
Nine different women. Kids, today’s word is “condom.”
Selvin Young will take over as the starting running back. Young managed to stay under the radar last season, but had 140 carries for 749 yards. That’s 5.2 yards per carry. If he could come anywhere close to that for a full season and improve significantly on his one touchdown he’d be an all-pro.
Key departures for Mike Shanahan’s squad include safety Nick Ferguson, linebacker Ian Gold, receiver Javon Walker, and 15 year Bronco kicker Jason Elam. It’ll be strange seeing someone else line up for kicks in Denver.
Even with a new front office the Broncos were able to adjust and take a big step toward getting back into the playoffs. Last season they were 7-9 and missed the post season for the first time in six years.
Denver added linebacker Boss Bailey, brother of current Broncos’ cornerback Champ Bailey, a former Lion who had 88 tackles in his best season. They also signed receivers Keary Colbert, Darrell Jackson, and Samie Parker to compliment Brandon Marshall, who burst on the scene last season with 102 catches for 1325 yards. The new weapons should make life easier for quarterback Jay Cutler as well.
Safety Marlon McCree, monstrous defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson, and center Casey Wiegmann were also brought in Robertson, a former 4th overall pick, has tons of potential, but never lived up to it in his five seasons with the Jets.
Draft Analysis
Denver went into the draft needing to add depth on both sides of
the ball. Nine picks paired with their big group of incoming free
agents should go a long way toward addressing the problem.
The Broncos chose Boise State offensive tackle Ryan Clady with the 12th overall pick. Clady was one of the few top notch tackles available in the draft and should protect Cutler’s blind side for years to come.
Virginia Tech receiver Eddie Royal was added to the Broncos’ new stable of route-runners in the 2nd round. Overall Denver used five picks on offense and four on defense.
Fifth round pick Ryan Torain out of Arizona State could be the next running back to benefit from Mike Shanahan’s genius. Torain is a downhill, inside runner who can assess plays quickly, hit the hole hard and keep moving for big yardage.
