2008 AFC West Division Preview
By Adam Barone
1. San Diego Chargers (12-4): When the dust clears the Chargers
will still have L.T., and everyone will be wondering why there was
so much dust. San Diego has possibly the most talented roster in
the NFL, but lost Lorenzo Neal and Michael Turner. Don’t underestimate
the value of either a quality lead blocker or a bruising backup.
Darren Sproles is probably not any more than a third-down back and
a Rice Crispies Mascot.
2. Denver Broncos (10-6): Mike Shanahan has been struggling to work
his magic lately, but could have an improved team this season. Jay
Cutler has a bunch of shiny new weapons at his disposal, and a new
start for what has the potential to be a decent playmaking defense.
If Cutler can take the next step, the Broncos have a shot at the
playoffs.
3. Oakland Raiders (6-10): It’s pretty sad to think that this is actually an optimistic prediction for the Raiders. JaMarcus Russell, all 270 lbs. of him, will finally get his shot at running the offense. Smart money says he’ll be a disappointment, but he should have plenty of support from the running game. Darren McFadden, Justin Fargas, and Michael Bush make up what will likely prove to be one of the most promising young backfield committees in football. Some free agent acquisitions this off-season have also elevated the silver and black to “respectable.”
4. Kansas City Chiefs (5-11): The Chiefs are clearly in a rebuilding mode, despite what appeared to be an effort to reload. Larry Johnson will be healthy to start the season, but doesn’t have quite the same offensive line that he did in the past. Brody Croyle will finally get his shot, and will determine just how successful K.C. can be.
