2008 AFC South Division Preview
By Adam Barone
1. Indianapolis Colts (12-4): The Colts have a fancy new stadium, but the same battle-tested roster. Reggie Wayne will prove to be completely capable as Peyton Manning’s top target, and it will be business as usual for Indy. Tony Dungy has done what he was brought in to do, elevating the defense to 3rd overall in yards allowed per game in 2007. A few holes in the roster have been filled with capable players, so expect the same old Colts.
2. Jacksonville Jaguars (11-5): Finishing second in what promises
to be the most competitive division in football should be no disappointment.
The Jags are arguably the most physical team in the entire league
and are primed to make plenty of noise in the playoffs. The only
hole on their roster was filled by a pair of pass-rushing draftees,
raising Jacksonville’s chances of overtaking the Colts.
3. Houston Texans (9-7): The Texans could be the Browns of 2008,
especially if Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson can stay healthy. Their
24th ranked defense is improving, with Mario Williams and Amobi
Okoye growing up quickly. Schaub played in only 11 games in 2008,
but with promising results. Kevin Walter and Owen Daniels are on
the verge of making themselves known around the league.
4. Tennessee Titans (8-8): Somehow the Titans managed to sneak into the playoffs last year, despite outscoring their opponents by just four points. Vince Young slung the ball to the other team 17 times, while connecting with his own lousy receivers for scores just nine times. LenDale White is at his house right now stuffing his face with donuts.
