2008 AFC East Division Preview
By Adam Barone
1. New England Patriots (14-2): Certainly a huge shock, the Pats will come out on top in the AFC East this season. They put up a whopping 589 points last season and finished third in the conference in points against. They won’t go undefeated again, but 14-2 or 13-3 isn’t too shabby. It’s doubtful that anyone will do anything to irritate Bill Belichick this off-season, as the rest of the league was embarrassed plenty last year. Look for the Pats to show up in the Super Bowl again, this time with better results.
2. Buffalo Bills (9-7): The Bills finished last season at 7-9, but have some quality young talent. The return of Paul Posluszny to the middle of their defense will be a huge boost. The coaching staff plans to get Marshawn Lynch more involved in the passing game this year, so the Bills could have a breakout star on each side of the football.
3. Miami Dolphins (5-11): The bottom of the division will be a coin flip. Both of these teams are the opposite of “good.” The Fins are on the upswing after a complete roster re-vamp, so they’ll have the momentum. There’s a huge question mark at quarterback, and punctuation hasn’t faired well in the NFL in the past. Thank you, I’ll be here all week. Once Ronnie Brown feels comfortable with his surgically repaired ACL, the offense will have an anchor. Eh-hem—Ricky Williams. Quality draft picks and a positive outlook for the future should keep Miami out of the toilet in 2008.
4. New York Jets (4-12): The J-E-T-S gave up 87 more points than
they scored in 2007, and their worst defender, Jonathan Vilma, is
now a Saint. Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens will compete for
the starting quarterback spot, but having two quarterbacks usually
means that you have zero. Not getting Darren McFadden in the draft
leaves a disappointing lack of playmakers.
