Coach: Mike Sherman (1st year at Texas A&M)
Team Name: Aggies
2007 Overall Record: 7-6
Returning Starters: 10

The 2007 record of the Aggies of Texas A&M (7-6 overall, 4-4 Big 12) got them a bowl bid. Texas A&M, which finished tied for third in the Big 12 South, met Penn State in the Alamo Bowl, losing 24-17. This season, the team looks to be in decline and a bowl appearance is not guaranteed.

Senior quarterback Stephen McGee (364 ATT, 211 COMP, 2,311 YDS, 12 TDs, 8 INT) returns as the team’s leading passer and rusher. In 2007, he carried the ball 181 times for 899 yards and five touchdowns. But he must be more accurate with his throws as he notched eight interceptions and just 12 touchdowns. The running game looks good, led by big senior Jorvorskie Lane and speedy junior Mike Goodson. The wideouts are a question mark and the offensive line is a major concern. Last season, the offense averaged lust 27.9 PPG, ranking them 57th nationally while putting the fourth lowest number of points on the board in the Big 12.

The only returning starter on the defensive line is end Cyril Obiozor (3.5 sacks). Obiozor has a reputation for making things happen. The middle starts three new guys, including the fast moving and acting duo of Von Miller and Jonathan Hayes. In the secondary, the team returns some solid and talented players, including senior safeties Devon Gregg and Alton Dixon. There’s depth throughout the defensive backfield. Last season, the team gave up an average of 254.9 YPG in the air, which earned the defense a national ranking of 92nd. Some more pressure on opposing QBs would be helpful.

With four almost certain loses in their schedule, the Aggies two swing games become very important. The first is versus Miami on September 20. The second occurs when the club meets Colorado on November 1. Both contests are at home.

For Mike Sherman this year will mark his first college football head coaching experience. Sherman and his ultra modern, creative offense will shake things up a bit in Aggie-land. Inconsistent play has plagued this team. If they can find their rhythm and win some tough games, Texas A&M can have a better-than-expected year. But with a new offense and an inexperienced group that could be a difficult task.
