Coach: Mike Gundy (4th year at Oklahoma State)
Team Name: Cowboys
2007 Overall Record: 7-6
Returning Starters: 13

Last year, the Oklahoma State Cowboys (7-6 overall, 4-4 Big 12) ended the season tied for third on the South Division. The Cowboys, who have made bowl appearances four out of the past five years, went to the Independence Bowl where they played Alabama. The Tide beat the Cowboys 30-24.

Junior QB Zac Robinson (333 ATT, 201 COMP, 2,824 YDS, 23 TDs, 9 INT) can pass. He can also run. In 2007, he had 140 carries for 847 yards and nine touchdowns. The field general, who took over the helm in the third game last season, ended the year with 3,671 total yards, which was a new school record. The offensive line returns all but one starter, which includes All-American TE Brandon Pettigrew. Although the running backs are young, they are solid and talented. The receiving corps includes sophomore Dez Bryant, who in 2007 had 42 receptions for 622 yards and six touchdowns. He’s ready to breakout this season. The rest of the wideouts are untested.

The defense gave up a total of 443.0 YPG last year. Tim Beckman, the team’s D-coordinator, is trying to get the unit’s ranking, which was 101st in 2007, down to 50th. There are seven junior transfers and a slew of talented first-year players on defense and that should help. CB Jacob Lacey, who picked five balls last year, returns as the anchor of the secondary. On the frontline, junior college transfers Lucien Antoine and Swanson Miller will be a definite upgrade. The linebacking group is also improved.

There will be four tough games for this team. Missouri on October 11, Texas on October 25 and Texas Tech on November 8 are away contests and should end up in the loss column. The swing game with Colorado is also away. It will be near impossible for this team to win their final game, which will be played on November 29 against Oklahoma.

In three years at Oklahoma State, coach Mike Gundy is 18-19. But in the last two, he’s 14-11. And although the Cowboys look to be a fourth-place team, they should also be a bowl contender. Eight and four is a possibility for the Cowboys in 2008.
