Coach: Bob Stoops (10th year at Oklahoma)
Team Name: Sooners
2007 Overall Record: 11-3
Returning Starters: 13
The 2007, the Sooners from Oklahoma (11-3 overall, 6-2 Big 12) finished first in the Big 12 South. The team then beat Missouri 38-17 for the conference crown. They finished the with a disappointing 28-48 loss to West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl.
Oklahoma put an average of 42.3 PPG on the board in 2007. Last season, his rookie year, QB Sam Bradford (341 ATT, 237 COMP, 3,121 YDS, 26 TDs, 8 INT) showed amazing poise and accuracy. His initial season was one of the finest rookie performances ever in college football. He’ll be protected by one of the best offensive lines around. Additionally, Bradford has excellent pass catchers to throw to, including senior Juaquin Iglesias (68 REC, 907 YDS, 5 TDs). The running game also looks good. Last season, RBs Demarco Murray and Chris Brown accumulated 1,375 yards while scoring a total of 22 touchdowns.
The Sooner defense features a big, dominating front four that includes sack specialist Auston English (9.5 sacks). The backfield returns both starting safeties—Nic Harris and Lendy Holmes—but starts two inexperienced corners—Brian Jackson and Dominque Franks. The linebacking unit has quite a few question marks. Junior MLB Ryan Reynolds is the only returning member of the group. Junior college transfers J.R Bryant and Mike Balogun will try to make up for the loss of Curtis Lofton, who went early to the NFL, and his 157 tackles.
The Sooners should outmatch everyone this season and that’s bad news for the North Division’s Missouri and Kansas, either of which they may meet in the Big 12 conference game. Kansas also has to play Oklahoma in the regular season. With their only tossup on October 11 when Texas visits, this team could go undefeated.
Coach Bob Stoops has been the main man at Oklahoma for nine years, his entire head coaching career, and has earned an impressive 97-22 record. The Sooners, who always seem to be bowl bound, have won the Big 12 three out of the past four seasons. Another conference title and a BCS bowl game look to be theirs in 2008.
