Coach: Chris Ault (24th year at Nevada)
Team Name: Wolf Pack
2007 Overall Record: 6-7
Returning Starters: 13
The Nevada Wolf Pack (6-7 overall, 4-4 WAC) finished last season tied for fourth. The team lost a tough quadruple overtime game against Boise State 69-67 and lost two other conference contests by three or fewer points. They traveled to the New Mexico Bowl where they played the New Mexico Lobos, losing 23-0.
The offense is explosive. Led by sophomore QB Colin Kaepernick (247 ATT, 133 COMP, 2,175 YDS, 19 TDs, 3 INT) and senior RB Luke Lippincott (267 CAR, 1,420 YDS, 15 TDs), the Wolf Pack had the 11th most productive offense in the nation. Senior wide receiver Marko Mitchell (53 REC, 1,129 YDS, 8 TDs) is back as the leading pass catcher. Additionally, backup junior QB Nick Graziano offers another prime alternative as a starter. The line returns four starters who offer a solid foundation.
New defensive coordinator Nigel Burton, who served Oregon State as the secondary coach, brings in a new scheme to upgrade a defense that was rated 95th overall, allowing an average of 32.5 PPG. This season the Wolf Pack returns to a 4-3 scheme after trying a 3-4 set last season. There are seven new recruits designated for the secondary. Only four starters come back to the “D”. Senior MLB Joshua Mauga (82 tackles, 37 solo) is a leader on defense.
Although their schedule is not light, it is also not overwhelming. Eight wins are possible and nine are not out of the question. The lone tossup for this team is against Hawaii on October 25, a team the Wolf Pack almost beat last season. Boise State is favored when they play Nevada on November 22 but don’t rule out an upset for the Pack.
Coach Chris Ault (191-85-1 in 23 years) has his team on a three-year bowl run. This year should make it four in a row. The offense will put points on the board and if the defense can come through on another game or two, the Pack will finish with a winning conference record. This club could be one of the top two or three in the WAC.
