Coach: Bo Pelini (1st year at Nebraska)
Team Name: Cornhuskers
2007 Overall Record: 5-7
Returning Starters: 11
In 2007, the Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-7 overall, 2- 6 Big 12) tied for fifth-place in the conference. The team did not make a bowl appearance for the second time in four years. Last time they missed a post-season opportunity was in 2004 when once again they won just five games. This year look for the Cornhuskers to do about the same as they did in 2007.
The Nebraska offense was good last season and should be fairly good in 2008. Senior Joe Ganz (152 ATT, 89 COMP, 1,435 YDS, 16 TDs, 7 INT) gets his first and only shot as a fulltime starter. He started the final three games last season and was extremely effective. Ganz is a mobile playmaker. One target will be senior RB Marlon Lucky (206 CAR, 1,019 YDS, 9 TDs). Lucky, who is the leading returning rusher in the Big 12, also returns as the Cornhuskers’ top pass catcher, having grabbed 75 balls from the air for 705 yards and three touchdowns. The offensive line is seasoned and extremely effective. Last season, this team averaged 33.4 PPG. This year they stand to put even more on the board.
The skinny on the 2007 defense is the following—112th in total yards, 114th in scoring and 116th against the run. That is not good and unless the frontline and middle can do something about opponent rushing attacks and quarterbacks taking time in the pocket, expect more of the same this season. The secondary returns just one starter—junior safety Larry Asante. Still there is talent on board in the backfield.
Five wins look certain for the team. Expect in-conference wins against Iowa State and Baylor. The Cornhuskers final two games will probably determine their Big 12 and bowl fate. Both Kansas State on November 15 and Colorado on November 28 are tossups.
Bo Pelini, who was an interim head coach for one game at Nebraska in 2003, has taken over the team. Nebraska can put points on the board but they haven’t been able to stop opponents from doing the same. Last season, USC scored 49, Colorado 65 and Kansas 76. That has to change for this team to take their swing games.
