Coach: Gary Pinkel (8th year at Missouri)
Team Name: Tigers
2007 Overall Record: 12-2
Returning Starters: 14
Last season, the Missouri Tigers (12-2 overall, 7- 1 Big 12) finished first in the Big 12 North and then lost to Oklahoma 38-17 in the conference championship game. In the post-season, the Tigers met and defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks 38-7 in the AT&T Cotton Bowl.
QB Chase Daniel (563 ATT, 384 COMP, 4,306 YDS, 33 TDs, 11 INT), who in 2007 was a Heisman Trophy finalist and the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, should put in another spectacular season. He’ll be throwing to wideout Jeremy Maclin (80 REC, 1.055 YDS, 9 TDs), amongst others. Maclin, a fine athlete, also ran for 375 yards and four touchdowns last season. Tight end Chase Coffman, who holds the Missouri record for most touchdown catches, is another go-to guy. The offensive line is one of the best around. Running back Jimmy Jackson, a senior, anchors the tailback position.
While the offense scored an average of 39.9 PPG (8th in the nation), the defense allowed just 23.1 PPG (37th in the nation). Teams could not run on the Tigers and that should be the case again this year. The linebackers are first-rate with junior WLB Sean Weatherspoon (130 tackles, 77 solo) anchoring the group. Senior DE Stryker Sulak (6 sacks) is one of three returning starters upfront. Free safety William Moore, who played hurt part of last season, tied for the league lead in picks with eight. Four starters return to the secondary.
Nine wins are just about assured. Swing contests include the August 30 opener versus Illinois and the final regular season game on November 29 versus Kansas. On October 18, they travel to Texas to meet a very tough Longhorn team. That game can certainly go either way.
Over the past five seasons, Missouri has made it to four bowl games. Last season was their best over that same time period. Despite the fact that they have had to reload on offense a perfect record is not out of the question for these Cats. Head coach Gary Pinkel (49- 37 in seven years with Missouri; 122-74-3 in 17 years) knows how to get his guys to play solid football.
