Coach: Ron Prince (3rd year at Kansas State)
Team Name: Wildcats
2007 Overall Record: 5-7
Returning Starters: 12

The 2007, the Kansas State Wildcats (5-7 overall, 3-5 Big 12) tied for fourth in the Big 12 North. The team ended their season by losing four in a row. There was, of course, no bowl berth for this team.

In 2006 as a freshman, QB Josh Freeman threw 18 picks. Last season, he tossed only 11 while setting Kansas State records by throwing for 3,353 yards, completing 63.3% of his passes and hitting for 18 touchdowns. With more improvement, Freeman, now a junior, could get this team on track. Expect senior WR Deon Murphy (57 REC, 605 YDS, 5 TDs) to be his go-to guy. Junior Leon Patton (83 CAR, 390 YDS, 4 TDs) returns as the leading rusher on the club. Patton’s yardage total last season was down by more than 200 yards from his freshman year. Transfer Daniel Thomas will give him some competition for the RB position. The offensive line looks sound.

The K-State defense is problematic. The frontline is porous. LB Antwon Moore, who’s coming back from an injury that sidelined him for most of 2007, could be a serious force on the field, while the secondary certainly possesses potential. Billy McClellan and Blair Irvin, both junior college transfers, could be difference makers at the corners. Safety Chris Carney, a junior, notched four interceptions in 2007.

Six wins are not out of the question for this team. Swing games are at opposite ends of the Wildcats’ season. On September 17, the team travels to Louisville to play the Cardinals. Then on November 15, Kansas State hosts Nebraska. It looks likely that the club will go 6-6 if they can secure victories in both contests.

Coach Ron Prince has been a head coach for two years with both of those seasons being at the helm of Kansas State. In that time, he’s posted a 12-13 record. By importing some talented transfers, Prince has given the team a chance to get back to 500. Overall, it’s not the most desirable outcome, but it’s better than last season, and it’ll be a step in the right direction.
