Coach: Bobby Bowden (33rd year at Florida State)
Team Name: Seminoles
2007 Overall Record: 7-6
Returning Starters: 15
Last year, the Seminoles of Florida State (7-6 overall, 4-4 ACC) were fourth in the Atlantic division. The club upset Boston College 27-17, which helped them earn a bowl bid. The Seminoles traveled to the Music City Bowl where they lost to Kentucky 28-35.
FSU must generate more offense, and the ability to do so hinges on their starting quarterback. It could be Drew Weatherford (318 ATT, 181 COMP, 2,049 YDS, 9 TDs, 3 INT). But in three seasons, Weatherford, who is nursing an ankle injury, has been inconsistent. Sophomore Christian Ponder, who took all of the first-team snaps this spring, offers more mobility, arm strength and smarts when it comes to the team’s complex offensive system. WR Preston Parker (62 REC, 791 YDS, 3 TDs) could be an important force, if his legal problems don’t take him out of the game. Senior WR Gregg Carr returns having averaged 18.6 yards per catch—best in the nation. RB Antone Smith (192 CAR, 819 YDS, 3 TDs), now a senior, could have a breakout season, but he’ll compete first against a rushing group that is deep. The offensive line improved last season and will hopefully improve again in 2008.
The Noles inexperienced defense was sound in 2007, ranking 22nd versus the rush and 34th overall. This year, they should be even better. Six starters will serve a three-game suspension due to academic misconduct. Once they return, the “D” should be primo. DE end Everette Brown is back as the team’s sack leader with 6.5. The secondary gave up an ACC-worst 24 passing TDs in 2007. But they look vastly improved. CB Patrick Robinson grabbed six picks in 2007 and should be even better this season. Senior MLB Derek Nicholson led FSU in tackles with 99 (46 solo).
Five wins look certain for Florida State. The team will play six tossup games, including three straight—Wake Forest (September 20), Colorado (September 27) and Miami (October 4). Then on October 25, the club meets Virginia Tech. The November 8 game against Clemson and November 22nd meeting with Maryland can both go either way.
Five wins look certain and one loss, to Florida, seems to be in the cards for FSU. In 32 years with the Seminoles, coach Bobby Bowden is 300-87-4. Bowden’s ability to guide this team to wins in the numerous tossup contests will be essential in 2008.
