Coach: David Cutcliffe (1st year at Duke)
Team Name: Blue Devils
2007 Overall Record: 1-11
Returning Starters: 17

For the Duke Blue Devils (1-11 overall, 0-8 ACC) 2008 seems to hold the same promise as 2007. Not only did Duke finish last in the ACC’s Coastal division, they also finished dead last in the entire conference. Since 1999, Duke has won 17 games and lost 97 for a winning percentage of .150. The question is—what chance does a team like this have in a division such as the ACC Coastal?

Junior QB Thaddeus Lewis (360 ATT, 199 COMP, 2,430 YDS, 21 TDs, 10 INT) will most likely start but QB Zack Asack, also a junior, also has good stuff when it comes to running the offense. WR Eron Riley (40 REC, 830 YDS, 9 TDs) returns as the leading pass catcher. He makes for a tall target and has a nose for the goal line. Overall the offensive line looks good, while RB Re’quan Boyette (104 CAR, 432 YDS, 2 TDs) is back as the team’s leading ground gainer.

The defense returns nine starters from a squad that let opponents score 33.2 PPG. The frontline brings back every one of its starters, including sack leader and junior DT Vince Oghobaase (4.5), a rock-solid lineman. The linebacking squad is seasoned and tough with senior MLB Michael Tauiliili (108 tackles, 53 solo) and junior OLB Vincent Rey (111 tackles, 49 solo) anchoring the group. CB Leon Wright (3 INT) and SS Adrian Aye-Darko will be tough on receivers.

The Blue Devils should win their first contest, an August 30 meeting with James Madison. After that, the team will have a tough time capturing another victory. Two swing contests in a row—against Navy on September 13 and Virginia on September 27—could result in the Blue Devils garnering two more victories.

Coach David Cutcliffe, who starts his first season at Duke, has a six-year coaching record of 44-29. He brings a winning attitude and the ability to make teams into competitors. The Duke Blue Devils play a forgiving schedule that should help them accumulate a few more wins than they did in 2007.
