Coach: Ron Prince (3rd year at Colorado)
Team Name: Buffaloes
2007 Overall Record: 6-7
Returning Starters: 14
The Colorado Buffaloes (6-7 overall, 4-4 Big 12) finished third in the Big 12 North and earned a trip to the Independence Bowl. There they met and lost to Alabama 30-24. Although these Bison were lacking in some categories last season, they were much improved over the 2006 club that notched just two wins.
This season, these Bison will be stampeding rather than moving along methodically. Colorado’s new offense will use fewer huddles and be run at a faster pace. Sophomore QB Cody Hawkins (463 ATT, 263 COMP, 3,015 YDS, 22 TDs, 17 INT) played well as a freshman and could have a breakout season in 2008. The running game features one of the most exciting freshmen around—Darrell Scott. Another young guy, Josh Smith, gets his first start as a wideout; a lot is expected from him. Most of the frontline is experienced, which should help.
The Buffaloes were especially effective against the run in 2007, ranking 31st nationally. The frontline, which is strong, seasoned and smart, includes George Hypolite who was All-Big 12 last season. The linebacking unit possesses some fine potential and the return of Michael Sipili and Marcus Burton, neither of whom were allowed to play last season, will improve this squad. The biggest question for this club is at the corners, which lost its top performers from last season to either graduation or injury.
The swing games are plentiful for this team, which is a good sign. There are more wins than losses projected in 2008 and the majority of Colorado’s games are winnable. Kansas and Missouri look like the only sure defeats for the Buffaloes. Three straight tossups from mid-September to early-October have the Bison playing West Virginia, Florida State and Texas. Texas A&M on November 1 can go either way and the final two contests versus Oklahoma State and Nebraska are also up in the air.
In two years with the Buffaloes, coach Dan Hawkins is 8-17. He came to the school with an overall mark of 86-16-1. Hawkins’ rebuilding of the program has gone well thus far and there’s excitement over this year’s incoming class. This team could have a winning season in 2008.
