Coach: Tommy Bowden (10th year at Clemson)
Team Name: Tigers
2007 Overall Record: 9-4
Returning Starters: 16
In 2007, the Clemson Tigers (9-4 overall, 5-3 ACC) finished tied for second in ACC Atlantic Division. They followed up a fine regular season with an appearance in the Chik-fil-A Bowl. There they met and lost to Auburn in OT 20-23.
QB Cullen Harper (433 ATT, 282 COMP, 2,991 YDS, 27 TDs, 6 INT) had a breakout season in 2007. Now a senior, he is primed to put in an even more impressive year. Senior Aaron Kelley (88 REC, 1,081 YDS, 11 TDs) returns as the leading pass catcher and Harper’s favorite target. There’s depth at wideout too. Additionally, senior RB James Davis (214 CAR, 1,064 YDS, 10 TDs), who decided to stay for his senior season, shares the field with another talented runner—C.J. Spiller. The big problem for this team is the frontline. Last season they allowed 35 sacks, which was way too much.
In 2007, the Tiger defense held opponents to just 18.7 PPG (10th in the nation). The secondary includes senior FS Chris Chandler and senior SS Michael Hamlin. They each picked four balls in 2007. The corners look good too. Upfront, DE Ricky Sapp leads a fine line. Sapp had six sacks last season. The linebacking unit is a big question mark for the Tigers. With just one starter returning, the group is untested. The squad lost two of their best after last season—Nick Watkins and Tramaine Billie.
Clemson should win at least 10 and could go undefeated. Swing games are October 9 at Wake Forest and November 8 at Florida State. They’re helped by the fact that Boston College is in decline and N.C. State, although rebuidling, has not improved enough to challenge them. Still, nothing is assured this season. Clemson’s O-line will have a lot to say about the team’s win-loss record.
Head coach Tommy Bowden is 62-49 in nine years at Clemson. Once again, he’s got another fine team. But Clemson has not won a conference title in 17 years even though many of those seasons, they were poised to do so. A perfect season is within their grasp but they could lose two or even four if they revert to past behavior.
