Coach: Chris Peterson (3rd year at Boise State)
Team Name: Broncos
2007 Overall Record: 10-3
Returning Starters: 12

Last season, the Boise State Broncos (10-3 overall, 7-1 WAC) finished second in the conference. They won a spot in the Hawaii Bowl where they were beaten by East Carolina 41-38. This perennial bowl team will once again have its eyes on the prize and will certainly play in a post-season contest.

The Broncos will start either freshman quarterback Kellen Moore or senior signal caller Bush Hamdan. Although Hamdan is the safest choice, Moore managed to impress at spring practice and is now the frontrunner. WR Jeremy Childs (82 REC, 1,041 YDS, 9 TDs) leads a top notch pass catching squad. Senior RB Ian Johnson (207 CAR, 1,045 YDS, 16 TDs) has scored 45 touchdowns over three seasons, but he’ll find freshman Doug Martin vying for his share of the carries. There’s fine depth on this unit. The offensive line has four new starters.

Last season, the defense was ranked 25th overall, holding opponents to 21.6 PPG. The frontline returns two tough defensive ends and two solid tackles. The linebacking squad has been realigned and that should help against the run. In 2007, the team gave up 20 rushing touchdowns and were ranked 35th versus the rushing attack. Senior OLB Kyle Gregg (94 tackles, 47 solo) will see competition from frosh Hunter White. The Broncos have more depth in this unit than they did last season. The secondary is young and questionable.

Boise State plays two tossups. The first occurs when the team travels to Southern Mississippi on October 11. Their final contest of the regular-season on November 28 against Fresno State could mean the season. A loss to Oregon on September 20 seems certain.

Once again, the Boise State Broncos are poised to be competitive within their conference. In 2007, after taking five straight WAC titles, the team finished second to Hawaii. This season could result in another second-place ending for the Broncos. This time they’ll have to deal with the upstart Fresno State Bulldogs.
