The Big East fields eight teams seven of which possess bowl potential. The Big East is the smallest of the six major conferences, featuring some fine quarterbacks, stingy defenses and top rated coaches. It’s a highly competitive conference with a rash of teams that have vastly improved over the past few years.
The West Virginia Mountaineers show BCS Bowl chops. Pat White is by far the best quarterback in the conference. With White calling signals, the Mountaineers could simply win every game. It must be a bit scary for the team to have lost head coach Rich Rodriguez and most of the coaching staff to Michigan.
The South Florida Bulls have risen to the top of the heap quickly. QB Matt Grothe is a fine player, but he needs help from fellow teammates. Sometimes he’s a one-man team. FSU has the talent to challenge West Virginia, but they will have to gel quickly to do so.
Another team that has pushed to the top lately is the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. Quarterback Mike Teel is in charge of one of the best passing attacks in the conference, rostering a deep receiving corpse. The Knights play a very tough schedule and will have to persevere to make yet another bowl appearance.
The Connecticut Huskies put it all together last season, surprising everyone by capturing their share of the Big East crown by tying West Virginia for the top spot. The Huskies need to mix it up more on offense to make the grade. Last year, their defense did the bulk of the work.
Can the Pittsburgh Panthers do better than fifth-place? The answer is “yes.” But in order to do so they’ll have to hope that QB Bill Stull stays healthy. The freshman class is very talented.
The Louisville Cardinal defense must step up if this team is to succeed. There have also been loses at skill positions, which could hamper the team. The major element that will make or break this team are the many transfers they’ve signed.
The Cincinnati Bearcats boast of a fine secondary but concerns at quarterback are real. The talent level in many units is not high. Still, this team will be competitive.
The Orange of Syracuse lack depth and talent. Although they have improved, it’ll be very tough for this team to even realize a 500-season.
Look for the Mountaineers, Bulls, Scarlet Knights and Huskies to contend for the top spot in the league. This is a conference born to battle.
