Coach: Art Briles (1st year at Baylor)
Team Name: Bears
2007 Overall Record: 3-9
Returning Starters: 15
The Baylor Bears (3-9 overall, 0-8 Big 12) finished dead last in the Big 12 in 2007. They couldn’t win one conference game. In fact, they didn’t even come close. Once again this season it looks as if the Bears will be at the bottom of the Big 12 ladder.
The Baylor offense earned a national mark of 111th as they averaged a mere 18.2 points per game. Although their passing game was rated 27th, the team’s rushing game was ranked 113th. The line includes Jason Smith, who could be a first-round draft pick next year. Overall the O-line looks solid. The rushing unit is thin; they don’t have one standout. Quarterback is up in the air with either freshman Robert Griffin or senior Kirby Freeman getting the nod. If junior WR David Gettis can get his act together and reach his potential, he could have a breakout season.
While the Bears’ offense had a tough time putting points on the board, the defense had not trouble giving them up as opposing teams averaged 37.0 PPG (112th nationally). The unit gave up a total of 461.6 YPG, earning them a ranking of 110th. Three starters on the frontline return, which should help. Joe Pawelek, junior linebacker, is the heart of the middle unit. The secondary possesses talent but not a lot of experience. New coordinator Brian Norwood will try to improve that group.
There don’t seem to be many surprises in store for the Baylor Bears in 2008. The September 6 game versus Northwestern State may be this team’s only win. The next week the Bears play Washington State in a swing game. The final tossup is at home versus Iowa State.
Art Briles (34-26 over five years) starts his first season at Baylor. In his first coaching stint at the University of Houston, he created offenses that were explosive both in the air and on the ground. This is an important foundation year for the new coach and his new team. Like last season, the Bears could win three with one of those contests being against a conference opponent.
