Vince Needs Some Help
By Adam Barone
Since their Super Bowl loss to the St.
Louis Rams in 1999, the Tennessee Titans have been the personification
of salary cap troubles. They've lost so many quality players
in the past few years, including RB Travis Henry this off-season,
that it's hard to say that anyone on the team even knows the
names of the guys they're playing with. The only recognizable
name on the roster is second year quarterback Vince Young, who
won the NFL's offensive Rookie of the Year last season. Young
won the award mostly based on leadership value to his team,
putting up numbers that were not all too impressive. Playing
in 15 games, Young completed 51.5% of his passes for 2199 yards,
with only 12 TD against 13 interceptions. He did, however, run
for 7 scores. Somehow Vince Young just manages to keep his team
in most of the games they play in, while having little help.
Vince's receiving corps doesn't look too appealing, unless you're
a quarterback playing for a division three school or a high
school team. Brandon Jones, Courtney Roby, Justin Gage, Chris
Davis, David Givens, Roydell Williams, Paul Williams, Jonathan
Orr, and Joel Filani, all receivers who could potentially make
the team for the upcoming season, totaled (not averaged) 49
catches in 2006. Young will have to do pretty much everything
for himself.
Most teams lacking in downfield weapons are built that way because
their offense is focused on a star running back. The Titans
do not have such a luxury. After losing RB Travis Henry to the
Broncos,
Tennessee's ground game now rests on the shoulders of big, fat
LenDale White, who is listed at 235, but has been reported to
be as heavy as 270 pounds, and rookie 2007 second round pick
Chris Henry. The team loves Henry's athleticism even though
he didn't even start in college at Arizona.
The only people who have ever heard of the fullbacks who will
be blocking for either of these two are their families.
The Titans made a whopper of a free agent signing in CB Nick Harper,
the former Colt. Harper is only an average player, with just three
interceptions last season. Tennessee does still have Keith Bullock
at linebacker, who is an absolute beast and racked up a ridiculous
143 tackles in '06. Bullock patrols the right side, and
linebacker David Thornton, who had 107 tackles of his own in 2006,
the left. Both should accumulate similar totals in 2007, simply
because they're pretty much the only two players on the
team who actually know how to make a tackle.
2007 Tennessee Titans Predictions
The only reason why anyone involved with NFL gambling would pay any attention to the Titans is because they will be on the business end of some nasty spreads in the upcoming season. Simply because the nfl football spreads are likely to be so large, Vince Young and the Titans may be worth including in weekly NFL bets. Young seems to have an innate ability to make the score look better than the team. Keep in mind however, that the Titans are likely to be on the clock as soon as the season is over.
