Long Lasting WR Problem Could Be Solved
By Adam Barone
The Chiefs haven't had a wide receiver that could put a scare
into any defense since…um..er…yeah, exactly. Tony
Gonzalez is a fantastic tight end, and with the talent Kansas
City has had on their offensive line and at running back (particularly
Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson), they've been able to get away
with Eddie Kennison, Dante Hall, Johnnie Morton and a bunch
of other junk on the outside.
There's no reason for the Chiefs to have to live with Kennison
and his 51 receptions of a year ago as their only outside threat,
especially by himself. Kennison would function much better,
with his speed, as a vertical threat, stretching the field for
a quality possession receiver and TE Tony Gonzalez. In order
to make that situation a reality, the Chiefs used their #23
overall pick in the first round to bring in LSU
WR Dwayne Bowe. A big receiver with only average speed, Bowe
showed an ability to get open and make big catches in traffic
while in college. He's extremely athletic and K.C. is hoping
he's the guy that can take their passing game to the next level.
With QB Trent Green suffering a brutal concussion early in '06,
backup QB Damon Huard was forced to step in and take over an
offense that seems to be able to roll over NFL competition whenever
it wants, regardless of who fills the roster. Huard completed
60% of his passes, throwing for 1878 yards in 10 games with
an impressive 11 to 1 TD to INT ratio. Trent Green's offseason
trade to the Miami
Dolphins was almost a necessity because of his age –
not to mention Huard's obvious ability to lead the offense while
the team waits on the development of Brodie Croyle. Huard will
simply serve as a safety net until 2006 3rd round pick, former
Alabama
quarterback Croyle, is ready to take over. The Chiefs love Croyle
and would like nothing more than to see him earn the starting
job to begin the 2007 season. Of course, if the passing game
stalls, the Chiefs can always rely on the ever-dependable RB
Larry Johnson to be one of the top offensive players in the
league.
The Chiefs ranked in the middle of the pack in both rush and pass
defense in 2006 and have some concerns in the secondary. Starting
cornerbacks Ty Law and Patrick Surtain are both getting up in
age and there is an unbelievable lack of depth at the position.
There is also a complete absence of experience at safety, where
starting free safety Greg Wesley, totaling 67 tackles and 3 picks
last season is the only proven commodity. The front seven has
substantial depth and will be the strength of the defense, especially
new addition ROLB Donnie Edwards, who totaled 141 tackles, 2.5
sacks and 3 INT's in '06.
2007 Kansas City Chiefs Predictions
Despite their promising future, the Chiefs will have a tough time competing with the Chargers and Broncos in the AFC West in '07. But anything can happen in the NFL, which is what makes NFL sports gambling so interesting. If the quarterback position is solidified early enough in the season, and there are no injury problems in the secondary, Kansas City could beat the spreads and challenge San Diego & Denver for a division title.
