Coach: Jim Grobe (7th year at Wake Forest)
Team Name: Demon Deacons
2006 Overall Record: 11-3
Returning Starters: 14
Last season the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (11- 3 overall, 6- 2 ACC) won their division crown and then beat the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 9- 6 to take the ACC Championship. Playing the Louisville Cardinals in the Orange Bowl, they lost 13- 24. It was quite a ride for the Deacons, who had not been to a bowl game since 2002.
The Wake offense had a strong running game last season but didn't put many points on the board, averaging 21.6 PPG. Freshman Riley Skinner (65.8% COMP, 2,051 YDs, 9 TDs, 5 INTs) started as the team's backup and then ended up leading the club to a conference championship. Now he's a sophomore with a boatload of experience. Although the team has lost its primary receiver, senior Kenneth Moore (32 REC, 314 YDs, 1 TD), a solid, athletic player, is back. Senior RB Micah Andrews, who was injured last season, returns healthy and ready to run again. The offensive line should be excellent overall.
The Demon Deacons kept opponents to 15.4 PPG and were especially effective against the run. The club focuses on preventing big plays. The line-backing unit features Aaron Curry (83 tackles, 52 solo) and Stanley Arnoux (69 tackles, 32 solo)—both solid performers. New starter at MLB Chip Vaughn is huge and tough in the middle. The frontline is solid. The secondary includes the fast and talented corner Alphonso Smith (3 INTs) and versatile junior Kevin Patterson at SS.
It will be tough for the Demo Deacons to beat Nebraska. Wake Forest has three swing games on the road-- versus Boston College, Clemson and Vanderbilt and another at home with Florida State. This is a tough team to figure out. They could be 11- 1 or 7- 5 or something in between. They should be bound for a bowl game again.
