Coach: Bobby Johnson (6th year at Vanderbilt)
Team Name: Commodores
2006 Overall Record: 4-8
Returning Starters: 18
In 2006, the Vanderbilt Commodores (4- 8 overall, 2- 6 SEC) finished last in the SEC East. The last time the school went to a bowl game was in 1982 when they played in the Hall of Fame game, losing to the Air Force 28- 36. They've been to two other bowls—the Peach in 1974 where they tied Texas Tech and the Gator in 1955 where they beat Auburn 25- 13.
The offense will generate points due to QB Chris Nickson's (Passing: 55% COMP, 2,085 YDs, 15 TDs, 13 INTs; Rushing: 146 CAR, 694 YDs, 9 TDs) versatility. He led the Dores in both passing and rushing. His 55% completion rate could be better. He's got the best receiver in the SEC—All- American Earl Bennet (82 REC, 1, 146 YDs, 6 TDs). Most of the offensive line is back and that should be a big help in making the running attack more consistent game to game.
The Vandy ground game was fourth in the SEC, but the club's defense was ranked 10th. One area of improvement over 2004 and 2005 was in the sack stats. In 2006, the Commodores had 25 sacks, while over the past two seasons they recorded a total of 27. Senior DE Curtis Gatewood is ready for a big year after recording 7 sacks in 2006. Senior MLB Jonathan Goff (93 tackles, 67 solo) returns as the leading tackler. He's the centerpiece of a solid, veteran unit. At strong safety, Reshard Langford (3 INTs) is the hardest hitter. He needs the rest of the secondary to perform up to his standard.
If Vandy can beat Kentucky and Wake Forest in their two swing games, they'll have a shot at going 6- 6. That would be massive for a team that's averaged 2.8 wins per season over then past seven years. More likely will be a 4- 8 finish, which is exactly what they did last year.
