Coach: Todd Graham (1st year at Tulsa)
Team Name: Golden Hurricanes
2006 Overall Record: 8-5
Returning Starters: 10
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane (8- 5 overall, 5- 3 C-USA) looked to have the conference locked up last season and then lost three league games in a row, finishing 3rd in the West. They were then defeated by Utah 25- 13 in the Armed Forces Bowl. The team looks to rebound as they are primed to compete for the conference title in USA West, giving Houston a run for its money.
Senior QB Paul Smith (66.5% COMP, 2,727 YDs, 15 TDs, 9 INTs) is accurate and reliable. He'll be running a new no-huddle, hurry-up offense created by coordinator Gus Malzahn. No starting WRs return for Tulsa and with little experience this team will still rely heavily on the ground game. Senior Courtney Tennial (171 CAR, 845 YDs, 14 TDs) and junior Tarrion Adams are the primary runners. Tennial is able to grind out yards, averaging 4.9 YPC in 2006. Adams missed last season due to injury. He's healthy and ready to use his breakout speed.
The defense, which led C-USA in total "D" yards per game and pass defense, returns most of the front six, including MLB Nelson Coleman (98 tackles, 43 solo) and senior SLB Chris Chamberlain (51 tackles). They are two of the best at their positions in the league. Senior safety Anthony Germany led the team in tackles for a loss last season. He and senior BAN Steve Craver have playmaking smarts and ability. There's a lot of experience upfront but little depth, which is certainly a concern.
Tulsa plays its first home game against BYU and has a chance to upset. Swing games include UCF and late in the season Houston. The Houston contest could prove to be the deciding factor in who takes the West division. Oklahoma looks like an automatic loss. The Golden Hurricane will be very competitive in 2007.

Look for either Boise State or Hawaii having the best shot at playing in a BCS bowl game this January.
