Coach: Dennis Franchione (5th year at Texas A&M)
Team Name: Aggies
2006 Overall Record: 9-4
Returning Starters: 15
The Texas A&M Aggies (9- 4 overall, 5- 3 Big 12) placed third in the South and played California in the Holiday Bowl, losing 10- 45. Fans have expected more than a 25- 23 record from four-year coach Dennis Franchione. True, the team has shown improvement under Franchione, and their bowl drought ended also. But the Aggies have been humiliated in their last two bowl appearances.
Texas A&M scored 27.9 PPG, ranking them 34th nationally. Their rushing game was topnotch (rated 8th), but their passing was extremely weak (rated 72nd). Two tailbacks—junior Jorvorskie Lane (166 CAR, 725 YDs, 4.4 AVG, 19 TDs) and sophomore Mike Goodson (127 CAR, 847 YDs, 6.7 AVG, 4 TDs)—return showing power and moves. QB Stephen McGee (62% COMP, 2,295 YDs, 12 TDs, 2 INTs) is an accurate passer, tough runner and take-charge guy. His knock is that he scrambles too much and isn't patient enough. With two extremely athletic tight ends to throw to and senior WR Earvin Taylor, who is big and sure-handed, McGee needs to exploit his throwing much more. The offensive line is extremely solid.
On defense, the front four are sound. They're led by senior end Chris Harrington, who notched 7.5 sacks and 11.5 tackles for a loss in 2006. At LB, the team features the talents of Misi Tupe (54 tackles, 14 solo) and Mark Dodge, along with some fine new guys. The secondary showed some good play last season and looks even better in 2007. Junior free safety Devin Gregg (64 tackles, 23 solo) is fast and smart.
The Aggies have three swing games—at Miami and at Nebraska and then at home versus Oklahoma State. Texas A&M hosts the Longhorns and could pull off an upset. The Aggies should be in a bowl game. The question is how prestigious will it be and will they win? They need to prove they are a quality team.
