Coach: Steve Spurrier (3rd year at South Carolina)
Team Name: Gamecocks
2006 Overall Record: 8-5
Returning Starters: 17
The South Carolina Gamecocks (8- 5 overall, 3- 5 SEC) are going into their third year under the guidance of Steve Spurrier. In two season's, Spurrier has made the team bowl worthy, taking them in 2005 to the Independence Bowl, where they lost to Missouri 31- 38 and in 2006 to the Liberty Bowl, where they beat Houston 44- 36. Now the goal is to get to one of the major post-season contests. But they will have to finish better than 5th in the SEC East to do that.
QB Blake Mitchell (61 COMP, 1,789 YDs, 10 TDs, 6 INTs) has the talent to connect, but he needs to play smart and not force passes. Junior WR Kenny McKinley (51 REC, 880 YDs, 17.3 AVG, 5 TDs) looks to have a big season. Senior TB Cory Boyd (Rushing: 164 CAR, 823 YDs, 5.0 AVG, 8 TDs; Receiving: 35 REC, 406 YDs, 11.6 AVG, 2 TDs) can slash past defenders and has good ball catching skills. The big problem for this team is the all-important offensive line.
The South Carolina defense held opponents to 18.7 PPG (29th nationally). Senior MLB Jasper Brinkley (107 tackles, 85 solo) was spectacular last season and will be the anchor on "D." Although the team returns 7 starters, they also have a host of talented new guys who are in competition for their jobs. Senior WLB Casper Brinkley and sophomore DE Eric Norwood posted 7 sacks each last season. Senior DE Jordin Linsey was the MVP of the Liberty Bowl and should offer solid play. The secondary is solid.
This looks like a seven-win team but with a victory in the major swing game against Arkansas, they'll have an 8- 4 mark. A win against either Georgia, Tennessee, LSU or Florida equals a giant upset. An SEC title will be tough to win.
