Coach: Joe Paterno (42nd year at Penn State)
Team Name: Nittany Lions
2006 Overall Record: 9-4
Returning Starters: 14
The Penn State Nittany Lions (9- 4 overall, 5- 3 Big Ten) finished fourth in the conference and went on to beat Tennessee in the 2006 Outback Bowl 20- 10. Coach Joe Paterno (363- 120- 2 over 41 years) is now in his fourth decade as the main man and his fifth at the school, and he's still a vital leader. Eight starters return on offense, while the defense is minus one of its best ever—Paul Posluszny (372 tackles).
QB Anthony Morelli (53.9% COMP, 2,424 YDs, 11 TDs, 8 INTs) was inconsistent last season but started to blossom near the end. This is his senior year and it should be a good one. Juniors Deon Butler (48 REC, 637 YDs, 13.3 AVG, 2 TDs) and Jordan Norwood (45 REC, 472 YDs, 10.5 AVG, 2 TDs) are part of one of the best receiving units in the conference. Sophomore WR Chris Bell could be a major force. The team tends to be wide open in terms of passing and also runs the option. Senior FB Austin Scott, who wore a medical redshirt last season, is expected to carry the ball for the Lions.
Senior linebacker Dan Connor (113 tackles, 73 solo) is central at midfield, while the young Penn State line is loaded with talent and potential. The secondary looks good but could be a lot better if top safety Anthony Scirrotto had not been lost to the team due to his arrest for fighting in April.
This team could go either way, but the fact is the talent is there for them to take the Big Ten crown. The Ohio State game is the major swing contest, while beating Wisconsin or Michigan would be moderate upsets. To do that this Penn State must score more than 22.3 PPG, which is what they averaged last season. Against Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio State in 2006, they totaled only 19 points. "Offense" guys!
