Coach: Butch Davis (1st year at North Carolina)
Team Name: Tar Heels
2006 Overall Record: 3-9
Returning Starters: 9

The North Carolina Tar Heels (3- 9 overall, 2- 6 ACC) were fifth in the ACC Coastal. Winning Miami coach Butch Davis (51- 20 overall) starts his first season with the Tar Heels. He's got a strong incoming group but has few veterans and a very tough schedule that includes eight teams that participated in bowls last season.

Offensive coordinator John Shoop is in his first-year. Look for the former NFL coach to mix up his schemes in order to keep defenses on their heels. That's a great idea, but it's not easily to implement. Former QB, senior Joe Dailey, has been converted to a WR, making that unit, the team's best, even deeper. The QB position has not been determined yet, but it will be manned by someone with little to no experience. The frontline is average at best and the running back unit is thin.

Chuck Pagano an NFL coach like Shoop, starts his first year as defensive coordinator. The frontline returns two solid seniors—Hilee Taylor and Kentwan Balmer-- and will include highly touted freshman Marvin Austin. The defensive problems for this club revolve around the linebackers and the secondary. Senior Durell Mapp (87 tackles, 54 solo), the Tar Heels' MLB, returns as the leading stopper. He'll be the anchor. Free safety Trimane Goddard, who was injured last year, looks healthy and could make a difference. Kendric Burney and Jermaine Strong are both aggressive corners, who have the potential to energize the secondary. Pagano will develop more schemes than this team has ever seen.

With the hiring of Butch Davis and two professional coordinators, it's clear that North Carolina is serious about improving their program. This rebuilding year will be interesting with North Carolina. The offense has to score more than 18.0 PPG and the defense must keep opponents from scoring more than 30.5 PPG. Swing games include those against East Carolina, Virginia and Duke.
