The Nebraska Cornhuskers (9- 5 overall, 6- 2 Big 12) won the North Conference and then lost the Big 12 Championship game to Oklahoma 7- 21. They then lost to Auburn 14- 17 in the Cotton Bowl. A fine regular season is expected again. In 2007, fans are expecting a fine post-season also.
Three years ago, coach Bill Callahan (22- 15 in 3 years) brought the West Coast offense to Nebraska, revolutionizing football in the Big 12. With an overall balanced attack, the Cornhuskers averaged 30.6 PPG. Arizona State transfer Sam Keller, a senior and former Heisman Trophy candidate, will run the offense. He's got a great, professional arm and lots of smarts. Two seniors, WRs Terrence Nunn (42 REC, 597 YDs, 14.2 AVG, 3 TDs) and Maurice Purify (34 REC, 630 YDs, 18.5 AVG, 7 TDs) bring a lot of talent to the field. Two junior RBs, Marlon Lucky and Cody Glenn, are a lethal pairing. That is if Glenn can stay healthy. The offensive line has been improved.
On defense, Nebraska proved to be difficult for other teams to figure out. Expect more of the same this season. The starting front four are gone but the new group looks very talented. Still, their lack of experience could be a factor. Two senior linebackers return—Corey McKeon (69 tackles, 32 solo) and Bo Rund (65 tackles, 36 solo)—look to dominate the middle, while the secondary should be a winner, returning three starting seniors. Defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove is one of the best.
The Big 12 North looks like a shoe-in. The Big 12 Championship is a possibility as is a BCS bowl bid and victory. Missouri and Texas A&M are both swing games, while beating USC will be extremely tough as will taking it to the Texas Longhorns. As Callahan enters his fourth season, this could be the year that the Cornhuskers breakout big.
