Coach: Gary Pinkel (7th year at Missouri)
Team Name: Tigers
2006 Overall Record: 4-8
Returning Starters: 14
The Missouri Tigers (8- 5 overall, 4- 4 Big 12) tied for second in the Big 12 North and lost to Oregon State 39- 38 in the Sun Bowl. The Tigers are coached by Gary Pinkel (37- 35 in six years) who likes to confuse opponents with various schemes and a tricky spread offense.
Last season as a sophomore, Chase Daniel (63.5% COMP, 3,527 TDs, 28 TDs, 10 INTs) led and ran the 10th nationally ranked passing game and the 8th overall offense. Look for more and better as he connects with a load of talented receivers, including senior TE Martin Rucker (53 REC, 511 YDs, 9.6 AVG, 5 TDs) and junior TE Chase Coffman (58 REC, 638 YDs, 11.0 AVG, 9 TDs). Senior WR Will Franklin looks to have a big year. On the rushing side, senior TB Tony Temple (193 CAR, 1,063 YDs, 5.5 AVG, 7 TDs) offers plenty of potential. The O-line looks good with three starters returning.
While the Missouri offense was averaging 30.1 PPG, the defense was holding teams to 19.5 PPG. Stronger against the pass than the run, the frontline had a tough time pressuring QBs. Senior NT Lorenzo Williams (6 sacks) along with junior DT Ziggy Hood will anchor this questionable line. The line-backing squad is in transition, with junior Brock Christopher (87 tackles, 48 solo) moving from SLB to MLB. New starters with plenty of experience and new talent should make this unit strong. Senior Darnell Terrell returns at corner; he's proven to be a big-play guy. There are new starters at safety and the other corner but all offer experience and talent.
For the Tigers, Texas A&M and Nebraska are both swing games. Win those and this team could be 11- 1! Missouri will most likely be bowl bound. Their offense should be dynamic and if their unproven defense comes through, they will be close to unbeatable.
