Coach: Sylvester Croom (4th year at Mississippi State)
Team Name: Bulldogs
2006 Overall Record: 3-9
Returning Starters: 14
The Mississippi State Bulldogs (3- 9 overall, 1- 7 SEC) haven't been to a bowl game since 2000 when they beat Texas A&M 43- 41 in OT in the Independence Bowl. That's also the last time the team posted a winning record and had more than 3 victories in a season. Last year the Bulldogs finished last in the SEC West. The rebuilding effort to bring Mississippi State back now enters its fourth year under head coach Sylvester Croom.
The Bulldogs hope to pick up where they left off in the second half of 2006 when they nearly doubled their point production from the first-half. Junior QB Michael Henig (44% COMP, 1,201 YDs, 7 TDs, 9 INTs), despite being injured off and on last season, showed marked improvement in 2006. He's a smart and solid athlete. Senior WR Tony Burks (35 REC, 850 YDs, 5 TDs) is one of four talented receivers. Most of the offensive line returns, which should help the rushing game that ranked 104th in the nation last year. Anthony Dixon (169 CAR, 668 YDs, 9 TDs) could notch a thousand yards in 2007.
The club runs a 4- 3 scheme, which relies heavily on the frontline. That line only returns one starter. Senior Titus Brown (7.5 sacks) is a strong and speedy defensive end. Junior Jamar Chaney (65 tackles, 35 solo) is the anchor at MLB and Derek Pegues (4 INTs) can make things happen at strong safety. There's talent in all units but plenty of inexperience too.
Look for some small improvement here with a three-victory season. Expect four wins if Mississippi State can beat Ole Miss in the final contest of the season. It's a swing game for both teams. Improving offense and losses in defense will even out. More rebuilding for next year.
