Coach: Mark Dantonio (1st year at Michigan State)
Team Name: Spartans
2006 Overall Record: 4-8
Returning Starters: 12
The Michigan State Spartans (4- 8 overall, 1- 7 Big Ten) last won their conference championship in 1990 and last played in a bowl game in 2003 in the Alamo Bowl. Last season they tied for tenth in the Big Ten. Can they improve over that? New head coach Mike Dantonio, who has been with the Spartans for seven seasons, is dedicated to instilling a new attitude that starts with every player taking responsibility for winning.
Last season, QB Brian Hoyer (58% COMP, 863 TDs, 4 TDs, 3 INTs) stepped in for starter Drew Stanton, showing that he could make quick decisions, throw on the run and hit guys downfield. Sophomore WR T.J. Williams (25 REC, 281 YDs, 3 TDs) is a solid deep man and senior TE Kellen Davis gives this team another pair of sure-hands. Junior RB Javon Ringer (86 CAR, 497 YDs, 1 TD) averaged 6.3 YPC during a season where he was hampered by injuries. If healthy, this little guy with great moves and fine power can be a major force. The offense is looking to harness his power.
Look for the defense to focus on disciplined schemes working from a 4- 3 foundation. While the offense ranked 52nd nationally in PPG with 25.2, the defense finished at 100, allowing 28.4 PPG. A new defensive staff, including first-year coach Pat Narduzzi, needs to show improvement in the secondary. Good news— quality cornerback Ross Clark, who was injured last season, is back and healthy. The safety position now shows some depth and the frontline and linebackers are solid.
This team's swing games—Pittsburgh, Northwestern and Indiana—are all at home. Five wins are possible and anything more will be a major victory in 2007. A bowl bid is not out of the question, especially if the defense can come through.
