Coach: Mark Mangino (6th year at Kansas)
Team Name: Jayhawks
2006 Overall Record: 6-6
Returning Starters: 14
The Kansas Jayhawks (6- 6 overall, 3- 5 Big 12) last won a league title in 1912 when they were part of the Missouri Valley Conference. This year should mark the 95th consecutive that they finish out of the money. Still, the Jayhawks stand a chance of posting a winning record. Last year, they lost two games in OT and two more by a combined point total of four.
The offense was 19th in rushing nationally due to the efforts of RB John Cornish. The question is—who will replace Cornish, who led the Big 12 in ground yards? The Jayhawks will look to sophomore Jake Sharp and senior Brandon McAnderson to provide rushing yards. Much of the offensive line is gone, but 315-pound junior college transfer Chet Hartley teaming with tough junior Anthony Collins will power to this unit. The QB position is between sophomores Kerry Meier (56.5% COMP, 1,193 YDs, 13 TDs, 10 INTs) and Todd Reesing. If the more athletic Meier can make better decisions and hit with more accuracy, he'll be the starter. Junior WR Dexton Fields (45 REC, 455 YDs, 5 TDs), senior WR Marcus Henry and senior TE Derek Fine are good targets.
With a pass defense that ranked last in the nation, look for the Jayhawks to show some improvement. The problem was in the frontline, which could not mount a rush. There's some development there but not a whole lot. The secondary is improved and junior CB Agib Talib (6 INTs) is a major player. MLB Mike Rivera (90 tackles, 63 solo) anchors a fast line-backing corps.
The Jayhawks should garner five wins and possibly seven if they take swing games versus Central Michigan and Colorado. A 7- 5 mark would be their best since the end of the 20th century. A bowl bid, although not certain, is within their grasp.
