The Iowa State Cyclones (4- 8 overall, 1- 7 Big 12) tied for 5th in the Big 12 North Division last season. That forced the team to miss their second bowl bid in this century. There's a whole new coaching staff, led by first-time head coach Gene Chizik. This season don't look for much improvement in this team, but in a few years Chizik and company should make a difference.

New offensive coordinator Robert McFarland likes to throw. Senior QB Brett Meyer (56.9% COMP, 2,546 YDs, 12 TDs, 12 INTs) is one of the leading active passers in the nation. He can also scamper out some yardage (137 CAR, 177 YDs, 6 TDs). The returning leading receiver, senior Todd Blythe (34 REC, 484 YDs, 8 TDs), has not had his talents exploited but may with McFarland's schemes. The running game is up for grabs and the offensive line has very little experience. On the frontline, three junior college guys could make a difference.

On defense, look for the new coaches to be much more aggressive in their scheming. The team needs a lot of help on the "D" end, ranking 102nd in total yardage and 105th in points allowed per game nationally. WLB Alvin Bowen (155 tackles, 92 solo) led the nation in tackles last season and is back. MLB Joe Pawelke garnered an All-Freshman of the year award with 86 tackles and nine QB hurries. The secondary has new faces but is talented.

Three wins—yes. Four if they can beat Colorado in a swing game. If they can upset Iowa and take it to Kansas State, the Cyclones will notch two more victories than they had in 2006 and may make it into the post-season. Chizik signed 12 junior college players in the hope that he'll get some immediate help. But that's going to take some luck along with a whole lot of hard work and coordination.
