Coach: Kirk Ferentz (9th year at Iowa)
Team Name: Hawkeyes
2006 Overall Record: 6-7
Returning Starters: 14
In 2007, the Iowa Hawkeyes (6- 7 overall, 2- 6 Big Ten) tied for eighth in their conference and lost to Texas 24- 26 in the Alamo Bowl. It was the club's first losing season since 2000, which was the last year they were not in a bowl game. Head coach Kirk Ferentz looks to first-time starting QB Jake Chrtistensen (66% COMP, 285 YDs, 2 TDs, 2 INTs), a sophomore, to stabilize the team.
Iowa will play conservative, fundamental offense— a two-back, two-wideout set, running to set up the pass. Iowa possesses two fine running backs. Seniors Albert Young (178 CAR, 779 YDs, 7 TDs) and Damian Sims (138 CAR, 664 YDs, 6 TDs) averaged 4.4 YPC and 5.0 YPC respectively. The Hawkeyes have two strong receivers in Dominique Douglas (49 REC, 654 YDs, 13.3 AVG, 2 TD) and Andy Brodell (39 REC, 724 YDs, 18.6 AVG, 5 TDs). A lot depends upon this team's offensive line, which returns tackles Dace Richardson and Seth Olsen and center Rafael Eubanks. Last season the front guys had too many breakdowns. Look for that to change in 2007.
The Hawkeyes play a 4- 3 defense with little glitz and few blitzes. Consistency in terms of coverage and position play is essential for this group's success. Last season, the frontline never came together due to injuries. There are solid vets upfront, but they must stay healthy. Senior corners Charles Godfrey and Adam Shade return, while the safeties will be inexperienced players.
In 2006, the Hawkeyes hampered by injuries, stymied by a weak offensive line and hurt by the poor play of special teams. This season looks promising for Iowa. So much so that they could find themselves in a BCS bowl game. Their major swing contest is at Purdue. This could be a 10-win team.
