The Indiana Hoosiers (5- 7 overall, 3- 5 Big Ten) have not won a conference title since 1967 and haven't been to a bowl game since they went to the Independence Bowl in 1993. Last season, they finished tied for sixth in the conference. This year, they will need more defense in order to improve their performance.

This is a spread offense specializing in quick passes. At quarterback, there is no doubt that sophomore Kellen Lewis (54.9% COMP, 2,221 YDs, 14 TDs, 7 INTs), who started nine games last season, proved to be a multifaceted player, ably passing rushing for 441 yards and five touchdowns. He'll be looking to connect with second-team All- Big Ten wide receiver James Hardy (51 REC, 722 YDs, 10 TDs), now a junior. RB Marcus Thigpen has proven speed. The question mark on offense concerns the all-important offensive line, which has two sophomores and four red-shirted freshmen.

Can this team make it to a bowl game this season? A lot of that depends upon the defense. This defense has speed but lacks size. While last year's Hoosier offense was putting up 23.1 PPG, the defense was giving up an average of 32.8 PPG. The club ranked 109th overall in "D" and 102nd in rushing "D", allowing 228.3 YPG. Senior corners Tracy Porter and Leslie Majors are two of the best in the conference. There's been trouble at safety; so former WR Nick Polk has been moved to help. There are some solid performers on the front line and at linebacker.

Swing games are away against Western Michigan, Michigan State and Northwestern and at home versus Illinois. Winning all of these could give this club a chance at a post-season appearance. Although last year's 5- 7 record was the best mark since the turn of the century, the Hoosiers are still looking for a winning record.
