Coach: Ron Prince (2nd year at Colorado)
Team Name: Buffaloes
2006 Overall Record: 2-10
Returning Starters: 15
The Colorado Buffaloes (2- 10 overall, 2- 6 Big 12) missed a post-season seat in 2006. With coach Dan Hawkins starting his second year at Colorado, fans want more than 2- 10. But that will be difficult. The Buffaloes need many things, including a take-charge QB.
This team's offensive output was abysmal last season, scoring 16.3 PPG (107th nationally) and gaining only 118.5 YPG (116th nationally). Look for a frosh quarterback to be calling the signals. Cody Hawkins, a red-shirted freshman, is also the son of head coach Dan Hawkins and may become the team's starter. Last season saw this team run well, ranking 22nd nationally in rushing. Former QB Bernard Jackson looks to become a running back. He ably cut through defenders last year, gaining 677 yards, while throwing 7 TDs and 7 INTs. The frontline is unsettled but expect junior center Daniel Sanders to be the anchor while senior LT Tyler Polumbus brings plenty of experience.
The Buffaloes have a good line-backing corps led by dynamic senior Jordon Dixon (137 tackles, 80 solo, 4 sacks). Senior CB Terrence Wheatley (5 INTs) and senior FS Ryan Walters will stabilize the secondary, which must improve upon last year's performance. Opponents hit an astounding 66.9% of their passes versus the team. The frontline did a fine job stopping the run last season but didn't get to opponent QBs enough, which made it tough for the secondary to defend against the pass.
Realistic expectations are 2- 10 again, but if they can take three swing games against Colorado State, Kansas and Iowa State, that would be five wins. Plus, they have a shot at upsetting Missouri. Getting this team to 6- 6 would be a major improvement. In order to do this, defensive coordinator Ron Collins, now in his second year, will need to add some new wrinkles. It's doubtful that he will do so.
