Coach: Tommy Bowden (9th year at Clemson)
Team Name: Tigers
2006 Overall Record: 8-5
Returning Starters: 12
The Clemson Tigers (8- 5 overall, 7- 1 ACC) finished tied for second in their division and went on to lose to Kentucky 20- 27 in the Music City Bowl. The Tigers got off to a fast start in 2006, going 7- 1 and then ended up at 8- 5. Coach Tommy Bowden is 60 and 38 in eight years at Clemson and people are starting to feel that he'll never quite get the Tigers to live up to their potential.
The offense featured the run, with Clemson being rated 5th nationally in rushing yardage. Junior TB James Davis (203 CAR, 1,187 YDs, 17 TDs) is durable and quick, while sophomore TB C.J. Spiller is a tough ground guy. Junior Cullen Harper (70% COMP, 155 YDs, 2 TDs, 0 INTs) gets the start at QB. In spring camp, he showed patience in the pocket and the ability to connect with receivers on the long ball. It's hard to say right now who the big receiver will be, but junior Aaron Kelly (30 REC, 355 YDs, 3 TDs) comes back as the guy with the best stats. The offensive line is almost all new. Senior LT Barry Richardson will be the anchor of that group.
Sophomore Ricky Sapp (4 sacks) gets the start on the line; he needs to get more physical to be a difference maker. There's experience on the line, including Philip Merling, Dorell Scott, Jock McKissic and Rashaad Jackson. The Tigers play zone, limiting the ability of opponents to make big plays and frustrating QBs. The Clemson secondary is a unified squad that should do well with that coverage scheme. If senior LB Tramaine Billie is recovered from his injury, the middle will be sound.
What to expect from the Tigers this year? Four swing games make the difference for this club—NC State, Central Michigan, Maryland and Wake Forest. In their opening game versus Florida State, Clemson can pull an upset. That will go a long way to set the tone for the rest of the season.
