Coach: Butch Jones (1st year at Central Michigan)
Team Name: Chippewas
2006 Overall Record: 10-4
Returning Starters: 14
Last year, the Central Michigan Chippewas (10- 4 overall, 7- 1 MAC) took the conference title and then beat Middle Tennessee 31- 14 in the Motor City Bowl. That was their first ever bowl victory in three tries. With seven returning on offense and the same number on defense, the Chippewas look like they could repeat and for the first time ever return for a second straight year to the post-season.
As a freshman last season, QB Dan LeFevour (63.7% COMP, 3,031 YDs, 26 TDs, 10 INTs) showed amazing leadership and talent. He's back and enters his sophomore season with more experience, poise and confidence. That's great news. The receivers look primed, with Bryan Anderson (73 REC, 867 YDs, 5 TDs) returning as the leading pass catcher. Junior RB Ontario Sneed (135 CAR, 764 YDs, 4 TDs) has good moves and is the leading back. There's some fine depth at RB, which is something this team has not had. The passing game was ranked 22nd nationally and scoring 23rd (29.7 PPG)
The club gave up 22.3 PPG, which was too much. Overall, the Chippewas played the run much better than they did the pass. The secondary returns three and also has some depth; that should help. Senior MLB Red Keith (127 tackles, 61 solo) comes back as the leading stopper. Senior DT Steven Friend, a second team All-MAC choice, anchors this young four-player front. Friend returns as the sack leader with five. Overall, the defense possesses a solid foundation but has to fill holes in the line and at LB.
Central Michigan has three swing games, all of which are away—Kansas, Clemson and Western Michigan. If the defense can play better, the offense will put points on the board. Look for the Central Michigan Chippewas to go to another post-season contest.

Just because a team doesn't reside in the SEC, Big East, Pac-Ten, Big Ten, Big 12, or ACC conference doesn't mean they can't play for the national title. Look for either Boise State or Hawaii having the best shot at playing in a BCS bowl game this January.
