Coach: Houston Nutt (10th year at Arkansas)
Team Name: Razorbacks
2006 Overall Record: 10-4
Returning Starters: 12
The Arkansas Razorbacks (10- 4 overall, 7- 1 SEC) won the SEC West last season and then lost to Florida 28- 38 in the SEC Championship game and to Wisconsin 14- 17 in the Capital One Bowl. Last season was the first time the Razorbacks were in a bowl since they beat Missouri in the Independence 27- 14. Arkansas looks good once again.
The club was 4th in running and 108th in passing last season. Offensive coordinator David Lee is implementing a new NFL-style passing package with the hope that junior QB Casey Dick (51% COMP, 991 YDs, 9 TDs, 6 INTs) will continue to develop and stay healthy. The big time receiver for the Razorbacks is senior Marcus Monk (50 REC, 962 YDs, 19.2 AVG, 11 TDs); he's big, strong and able to break away. The running duo of juniors Darren McFadden (284 CAR, 1,647 YDs, 5.8 AVG, 14 TDs) and Felix Jones (154 CAR, 1,168 YDs, 7.6 AVG, 6 TDs) is the most potent in the SEC. The "O" line returns only two vets, but it has got talent, including All-SEC center Jonathan Luigs.
The club will play 4 -3 but will use less man-on-man coverage in the secondary due to the loss to the NFL of talented corner Chris Houston. If senior DT Marcus Harrison, who was sidelined by a knee last season, can play that will be a big help. Junior DE Antwain Robinson (68 tackles, 44 solo, 8.5 sacks) uses his power against the run and the pass. Free safety Michael Grant (3 INTs), coming off knee surgery, has speed, smarts and big play ability. All corners and safeties look sound.
There are four swing games that will determine if this team wins ten in 2007—Alabama, Kentucky, Auburn and South Carolina. Three of those are at home. The elite Razorback running game, led by McFadden and Jones, makes this team a winner and an overall solid defense is a big help.
