2006 NFC East Preview
It’s doubtful that the Giants will take this division as they did last season. Bill Parcells’ Cowboys are starting to look too good to stop, especially if QB Drew Bledsoe can connect with the fiery Terrell Owens. Parcells has turned recalcitrant players into productive citizens before—most recently WR Terry Glenn.
Philadelphia hopes that losing Owens will create a positive through the subtraction of a talented negative. Eagles coach Andy Reid needs QB Donovan McNabb and receiver Brian Westbrook to have a healthy year in order to assure a productive and winning season.
The first time Dallas and Philadelphia meet will be on October 8 in the City of Brotherly Love. It will be interesting to see how much love Owens feels from the hometown crowd. Even more interesting will be how key players step up to the challenge. The teams meet again in Dallas just after Christmas. Those two games could mean the division.
Of course, it’s tough to count out Washington or New York. The NFC East has parity, meaning everyone has a chance. Hopefully, Eli Manning is not psychologically damaged from his terrible second half and horrendous performance in the playoffs. Head coach Tom Coughlin, who has won no sensitivity awards, won’t stand for inferior play and that may be just what Manning needs.
For the Redskins and head coach Joe Gibbs, the play and durability of QB Mark Brunell will be key. Brunell’s reliability and cool head may be a big advantage in a division that features Bledsoe, McNabb and Manning-- all QB’s with meltdown problems. Santa Moss and Clinton Portis are two impressive powers on offense.
