2006 AFC South Preview
There are two dominant teams in this division and two also-rans. The Indianapolis Colts are the team to beat and the Jacksonville Jaguars could be the team to beat them. Fighting for the bottom spot are the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans.
The Colts are expected to dominate and win the division. Yes, they are minus Edgerrin James, but they still have QB Peyton Manning and WR Marvin Harrison. Rookie RB Joseph Addai will try to make fans forget James. Although the Colts continue to lose quality players, Dungy signs talented replacements.
The Jacksonville Jaguars should be a close second to Indy, but have a tougher schedule than in 2005 when they were 12-4. QB Byron Leftwich must be more productive, as does the rest of the offense. The Jags have a fine defense, which will certainly keep them in many games.
Gary Kubiak, an offensive guru and quarterback mentor with over a decade of experience in Denver, is the Texans’ new coach. He’ll try to open up the field and get QB David Carr to the next level. A better offensive line would provide major help.
The Tennessee Titans, like Brando in the film On the Waterfront, “use ta be a contender.” They’d certainly like to be a perennial playoff team and Super Bowl threat again, but those days seem long ago and still far off. Draft pick Vince Young is their future, leaving the present unsettled.
