Coach: Bill Doba (4th year at Washington State)
Team Name: Cougars
2005 Overall Record: 4-7
2005 Pac 10 Conference Record 1-7
Returning Starters: 14

The Cougars are a team that scores (33.5 PPG in 2005) and racks up yardage (489.3 YPG). QB Alex Brink can throw (24 TDs) and has two dynamite receivers to hit—Jason Hill and Michael Bumpus. Getting points through the air should be no problem.

On the run, All-American Jerome Harris has gone to the NFL, which means the powerful and compact DeMaundray Woolridge, who averaged 6 yards per carry in limited action, will get the start. He bulls his way through defenses.

The offensive line, which provided excellent quarterback protection last season, has lost some talent. Although it’s a rebuilding year, enough key players are returning that they should be solid.

In the past, the defense has been able to stop the run; but the front line has lost some starters, which translates into a transition year. Mkristo Bruce notched 10 sacks last season and even more is expected from him in 2006.

Linebackers should all be in order, however the secondary is scary in a bad way. They were porous in 2005 and 2006 looks no better.

The Cougars won only 4 games last season but 5 of the team’s losses were by 4 points or less. It will be tough to improve without some cagey corners. Stanford and Oregon State near the middle of the year and Washington at the very end can all go either way.
