Coach: Tyrone Willingham (2nd year at Washington)
Team Name: Huskies
2005 Overall Record: 2-9
2005 Pac 10 Conference Record 1-7
Returning Starters: 14
Washington’s coach, Ty Willingham, is in the middle of a major rebuilding effort, which still has a long way to go. Last season the team earned 2 wins, doubling its total from the year before.
Quarterback Isaiah Stanback offers speed and a strong arm. He has stabilized and energized the QB position. Talented RB Kenny James, who was injured last season, should be ready to go, which will give the Huskies a running game once again.
On the receiving end, Sonny Shackelford (41 REC, 592 YDS, 1 TD), Anthony Russo and Chancellor Young can all catch the long ball.
One big problem for the team is the offensive line, which lost 70% of its top players from last year. Can they in any way offer the protection necessary for Washington to maintain a consistent attack?
On defense, the linebacking will be lacking depth and experience and the secondary is also very weak. Strong safety C.J. Wallace returns after running up 89 tackles, 59 solo, last season. On the front line, the Huskies have skilled but small players. Greyson Gunheim (5 sacks) will anchor that group.
The Washington Huskies were once a fine football program; yet, despite attempts to rebuild, they are still a long way from being competitive. Their best, and probably only, chances to win a conference game will come at the end of the year when they meet Stanford and Washington State on consecutive weeks.
