Coach: Frank Beamer (20th year at Virginia Tech)
Team Name: Hokies
2005 Overall Record: 11-2
2005 ACC Conference Record 7-1
Returning Starters: 10
Marcus Vick is gone and nobody knows who will be calling signals. Along with inexperience at QB, the Hokies will field an untested offensive line. The team needs to find a solid leader in Sean Glennon, Cory Holt or Ike Whitaker.
Brandon Ore, if he’s healthy, will be at TB and could give Virginia Tech 1,000-plus yards. The receivers are all fairly untested.
Last season the usually fine Tech defense was exceptional—the best in the nation, allowing only 12.9 PPG and holding opponents to a mere 247.6 YPG. They posted a plus 9-turnover margin.
On the front line, Chris Ellis, 6 sacks, will be tough on quarterbacks and runners. With four solid players on the line and a linebacking corps led by Vince Hall (112 tackles), this is a shut down defense.
The secondary includes rover Aaron Rouse (4 INTS), who is exemplary against both the run and pass. There’s depth in the area of pass defense.
Will there be another bowl for the Hokies? They’ve been to the post-season 13 straight seasons, and despite problems at quarterback and a doubtful offense, they’ll probably be in another.
Like all teams, Miami will test Tech. Clemson and Georgia Tech will also be no cakewalk.
