Coach: Al Groh (6th year at Virginia)
Team Name: Cavaliers
2005 Overall Record: 7-5
2005 ACC Conference Record 3-5
Returning Starters: 12
Virginia may not be cavalier about their offense this year. Their star quarterback, Marques Hagan, is gone and the core of the team’s standout offensive line, led by D’Brickashaw Ferguson, has also departed.
The receivers are plentiful. Deyon Williams (58 REC, 767 YDS, 7 TDs) and Fontel Williams, both seniors, head the talented group. Firth-year senior QB Christian Olsen will start for the first time. He knows the system but has extremely limited game experience.
At tailback the new starter, Jason Snelling, has done a decent amount of game playing, as has his backup, senior Michael Johnson. These guys can run but the new line must open it up for them.
The secondary looks strong for a change as 7 players return, including senior corner Marcus Hamilton who grabbed 6 interceptions in 2005. The linebackers are young and will need some playing time to find their legs. Sophomore Clint Sintim (3 sacks), who started in 2005, will provide leadership and drive. The front three has a lot to learn quickly to be effective.
There’s a stretch of four games in October that will determine
the Cavaliers’ season. They play East Carolina, Maryland,
North Carolina and NC State—all of which are swing games.
If they win all 4, the team could be 7 – 5. Add to that
a possible upset of Virginia Tech, the last game of the season,
and Virginia will be bowl bound.
